Preview // Abstract Orchestra plays MF Doom // The Crescent Community Venue, York // 14.06.19
As many of you will (and all of you should) know, our beloved Crescent Community Venue is quickly becoming THE place for music in York. This Friday the Ouroboros gang welcome Abstract Orchestra to the stage, a hip-hop big band who cover seminal albums by the likes of J Dilla and Madvillain. Friday’s gig will focus on one half of the Madvillain duo – that of the man, the myth, the masked legend – MF Doom. Born Daniel Dumile in 1971, Doom’s discography is simply incredible. From the heavily jazz-influenced 2004 album MM…FOOD to his darker 2018 collaboration with CZARFACE, Doom continues to prove his lyrical versatility, despite recently revealing he only rhymes for money.
By arranging such groundbreaking albums back to a jazz context, Abstract Orchestra are involved in an interesting kind of adaptation, since sampling jazz records became a hallmark of some of the most acclaimed hip-hop albums ever produced, including Madvillainy. But their sound also emulates other legendary performances of hip-hop records by jazz and big bands, such as those of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (Dilla) and The Roots (Jay Z). It’s sure to be a great night full of groovy beats and big brass sounds to get you in the mood for summer.
