Preview // Jorja Smith // The Junction, Cambridge // 12.2.2018
Drake-endorsed artist Jorja Smith has definitely made her mark on the British music scene as an essential piece in the uprising of young British artists alongside RAYE, Ray BLK, and Nadia Rose. Having made her first mark in music with “Blue Lights” and “Where Did I Go?”, she was launched further into the stratosphere with Preditah-produced “On My Mind”. Now having scratched the surface of her influence in the British music scene, Jorja Smith is embarking on live shows around the UK.
From small-time YouTuber at the age of 15, Jorja Smith has come a long way in the last 6 years since being discovered. She has cultivated a strong following which has led to being placed 4th in the BBC Music Sound of 2017 list and winning the BRIT Awards 2018 Critics Choice. We are still anticipating a full body of work and this year seems to be a promising year for the West Midland singer to finally release the much-anticipated album we have been waiting for. She notes Lauryn Hill and the Mos Def as influences but has been frequently compared to Amy Winehouse and FKA Twigs. Sonically we don’t doubt she will be great, but we still await to see how she makes her music come alive on stage.
She is currently performing live shows in the UK until next week and will be embarking on live shows in the US and Canada, as well as festivals this summer. So, there are many chances to experience her live and catch her before tickets become astonishingly pricey. We are excited to see how her vocals and stage presence transpire in person.
