Rinse | Born and Bred is on its way, and in the leadup to the event it’s time to share my personal favourite picks performing on the festival weekend.
First is Lady Leshurr – she has taken the internet by storm with her ‘Queen’s Speech’ freestyles, and is working on her new project UNLESHED later on this year. Leshurr is known for her playful and banter-infused lyrics, and her ever-distinctive Brummie accent makes for a great hype song – and possibly a good singalong. But with her undeniable talent for production and ever-readiness for a freestyle, it’s unknown what to expect; just know that it will be fire.
Second is the Mancunian Bugzy Malone, a staple in the grime scene. Bugzy has been grinding hard since 2010, and has been a key player in keeping grime as grime and not commercial. At times it feels as if he is merely speaking when rapping, but this has crafted his style of timing; so he gains respect solely in his own right. With tunes such as ‘M.E.N.’, ‘Pain’, and ‘Gone Clear’, he is definitely on my one to watch list.
Lastly, Novelist is definitely one to see. Something about his fury and lyrical flow is reminiscent of old and new Skepta, but nevertheless, Novelist is an artist in his own right. His production is flawless and complements him impeccably; from his mesmerizing flow on ‘Block Freestyle 2’ to his raw sound on ‘Street Politician’, you never get tired of listening to him. With this said, hit track ‘Endz’ will be sure to get the crowd hyped.By Adaobi Nezianya
