Tonight marks Freakin‘s seventeenth birthday – a quite impressive feat and an milestone probably quite closely shared with some of its younger visitors. Ever since they announced that Mark E would be coming along as part of the celebrations, we’ve been falling in love with his mixes and his own productions. To get you in the mood for this evening, here are a few of our favourites…
First, as it’s the most recent, there’s his new track ‘Avion Central’. Released just this week, it’s a breezy, delicate little dream that precedes the Avion EP due out soon.
In fact, you can check him out behind some Boiler Room decks a couple of years ago, laying down a superbly energetic set.
There’s also this year’s beautifully soulful LP, Product of Industry, which has this fantastic thought behind it:
“The name [of the record] lies in the manufacturing past of the area I grew up, [and] the manufacturing past of my family. [It references] how the decline of industry in the Midlands UK changed the landscape physically and socially — I’m now a music producer and DJ, and this is totally different to my grandparents who were truck drivers and sheet metal workers… And here I am, a product of industry, both currently and historically.”
You can stream the album here:
There’s also this delicious remix of Matthew Dear’s ‘Little People’, and this FACT mix from 2013, and this mix that he did for Dummy, and this incredible 2005 remix of Womack & Womack’s ‘Baby I’m Scared of You’.
Nearly a decade of releasing music and DJing has given Mark E an ample back catalogue of treats. We’d suggest delving in, and tonight’s Freakin might be the best place to start.
Mark E plays Freakin at Mansion, Saturday 1st November.
