Poor Spirits – Noise (Act 1)
Here’s a track where the use of auto-tune can be gratuitously enjoyed. The celestial melody is also a real treat. ‘Noise (Act 1)’ features on Portals mixtape #2.
Gold Panda – Thailand Chord Droner
‘Thailand Chord Droner’ is a standalone track uploaded online by the Panda around a week ago. Hopefully this is a hint at a new bunch of material.
Disclosure – Tenderly (Kidnap Kid remix)
Disclosure’s noteworthy single gets a revamp from serial remixer Kidnap Kid. Recommended by our Reviews editor, Luke Wilson. Download Disclosure’s EP for free off their Facebook page.
Julia Holter – In The Same Room
Picked out in the latest issue of Circulation as one to watch, Julia Holter has lived up to expectations if judged by the glowing reviews of her sophomore album, Ekstasis set to be released on March 8th. Fuzzy-sounding and seriously retro, ‘In The Same Room’ is one of a few catchy tracks that have already gone viral.
Death Grips – Get Got
By the sounds of it, the next two albums from Californian hip-hop group Death Grips will be as loud and as experimental as last year’s ExMilitary. According to our Comments Editor Joni, both will be released on the same label as Natasha Bedingfield.
ALX – I Will Love You More
Following the trend of Robyn and newbie Charli XCX, ALX celebrates a thread of glittery synth pop that always teeters on the unacceptable. Influences spanning the decades can be heard in this track, from ABBA to the 90s Madonna.
Germany Germany – Disconnect ft. Steffaloo
‘Disconnect’ is one of two tracks released on 26th February by solo artist Drew Harris. The five minute epic slowly degenerates into a loud, synthy dance track but I think that the first three minutes are worth it.
Hyperbolic Chamber Music – Hyperbolic Chamber Music
I’m still trying to work this one out. 22 minutes, 27 artists, produced by Ryan Hemsworth. This seems big. So big that it might not load in time, in which case have a listen here.
Clams Casino – Swervin’ (Remix) (Instrumental)
Hot off the press is an instrumental version of the remixed XV’s ‘Swervin’. Stripped of its vocals, the track loosens its ties with hip-hop/rap and moves towards a more ambient sound. Compare with the original remix.
Shlohmo – Rained the Whole Time (Nicolas Jaar remix)
Already featured in our top picks for February, this remix off Shlohmo’s Vacation EP is so good that it needs another airing.
Perfume Genius – Floating Spit
Finally, here’s one of the many beautiful tracks off Perfume Genius’s second album, Put Your Back N 2 It. I would hesitate to paint Hadreas as a more ‘fragile’ and less country Rufus Wainwright but I’ve gone and done it.
